Episode 23: Alternative facts and booze-loving babies

Scott spent his Christmas holidays/vacation in – where else? – America. But just how much did he have to drink? Judging by his audio postcard from a New Orleans bar it seems he was 80 per cent/percent drunk. At least. Or so he says.

Karin, on the other hand, is terrible at math/s and doesn’t do percentage drunkenness. But at least she knows she was drunk enough to force her visiting Best Friend Beth™ make the first snow angel of her life. Audio proof provided.

And, did you know who really loves going to breweries and bars? Babies do! And Scott has the evidence.

It’s a brand new episode, live from sunny Bandhagen, where spring has sprung, the flowers are blooming and the birds are singing! (How’s that for an alternative fact?)

Episode 22: Don’t Get Your Knickers in a Twist

It’s the 10th December – which is not Lucia Day, nor is it Saint Nicholas’ Day or Karin’s birthday. It’s Nobel Day!

We speculate about the reasons why Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature this year. Our theory? The Swedish Chef on the Muppet Show most definitely has something to do with it.

And for all our dedicated fans who enjoyed our laundry room special, we return to air our – or, in fairness, Karin’s – dirty laundry in public.

That’s all for 2016. Merry frickin’ Christmas from your favo/u/rite Snuggling with the Enemy personalities!

Episode 21: Swedish is Disgusting

Infart

Swedish is a beautiful language. That is, as long as you just listen to the Swedish Chef on The Muppet Show. But when you start dissecting what it is those Swedelings are actually saying, it turns out to be DISGUSTING.

Find out the true story behind words like “infart,” “kock,” “puss” and “Titti” as Scott and Karin get together in their Bandhagen studio to record a new podcast episode… in the company of an entire box of rosé. You’ll also find out everything you never wanted to know about Karin’s new job, Scott’s acting career, and shopping at Willy’s.

We know you’ve waited a long, long time, but here it is now. An extra-long episode for all you Snugglers!

One whole year since recording our last full episode, Snuggling with the Enemy returns to the podwaves for a brand new season of podcast funtimes.

Season 3 opens with the usual, ridiculous laugh track and references most people will never get, submerged, as always, in a pool of otherworldly sound effects. Oh, and of course, we pay tribute to Sweden’s pride and joy: ABBA.

Episode 17: Not Safe For Work

With the Snugglers now being flatmates/roommates – although, just to clarify, we do NOT share a room – last night we enjoyed a lovely dinner together. What we had to eat? Baguettes, pasta, basil, and tomatoes. It goes without saying that a discussion arose on how to pronounce all of the aforementioned foodstuffs…

Like most of the Western world, Sweden has had its share of anglicisation. In fact, Swedes are so fond of the English language, they have incorporated English words into their own language in weird, wonderful and mysterious ways. On today’s episode, we discuss some very odd such Swenglish phrases, including: Fan, fuck, förlåt!, Yes box!, Crazy bananas! and Shit pommes frites!

Ever been made to feel uneasy due to colleagues at work having cringe-worthy conversations? Well, we bet it’s nothing compared to some of the things you’ll hear in Swedish workplaces – which Scott will attest to, having recently been made to listen to a very open-minded discussion at work about “feminine hygiene” products.

Also on this week’s episode: Friday coffee! Typing class anecdotes! Gordon Ramsay! Swearing in Swedish and English!

Episode 16: Welcome to the suburb!

Farsta

Welcome to the very first Snuggling episode recorded in the brand new Snuggling HQ podcast studio!

But first things first: We are so, SO sorry we’ve been away for SO long! The simple explanation for our absence from the podwaves is that we recently moved in together in the beautiful Stockholm suburb of Farsta. In other words, we’ve been very busy moving all our stuff, familiarising ourselves with the redneck-handkerchief-loving locals and, most importantly, setting up our brand new recording studio!

In episode number 16 we catch up on what’s happened in the past month or so, and explain our extreme luck in having landed a förstahandskontrakt – a first-hand contract for our flat/apartment. It basically means we could live in it for the rest of our lives, should we want to! We discuss the ludicrousness of communicating with the person sitting right next to you via email, and dissect the difference between being manic and just being happy – FOR ONCE.

Also, don’t miss: Fingernail clippings in Dunkin’ Donuts! 1950s pantries! Special offers! Mobiles, cell phones and Handys! Slobber and dribble! Plus all the usual sound effects and fights over which pronunciation is better – American or British.

Episode 15: The Passion of the John

SALAMIFESTEpisode number FIFTEEN gets a well-deserved touch of Scott’s organ, and we find out that Karin has been to a classical concert titled The Passion of the John. We’re still not sure whether it was about toilets or about a man who was keen on prositutes.

We get a LIVE REPORT from Sweden’s pride and joy: flat-pack furniture giant IKEA. According to Scott, going to IKEA together is a death sentence for people who like each other, because they always end up having big arguments. Lucky for us then that we’re only enemies and not a couple! Well, apart from being a couple of nutjobs.

Also on this week’s show: Snuggling with the Enemy is moving to the suburbs! The origin of the phrase the most shit that is sucking that I am hating! Redneck handkerchiefs! Manspreading! Other stupid things men (and women?) do on the metro/subway/underground/tunnelbana! And last but not least: the return of our feature Enemy of the Week!

Right, that is all we have to offer you for now! Catch y’all later – we’re off to the SALAMIFEST down the road at ICA Sveavägen.

Episode 14: Crappy New Year

Snuggling with the bubbly.

Snuggling with the bubbly.

Welcome to what is quite possibly our best episode of the year! Err… We mean, the best episode of the year so far, obviously.

2015 has got off to a good start, with the Snugglers recording a brand new version of ABBA’s Happy New Year. And we also ended up giving relationship advice (yes, really) to some kid we met at a New Year’s party. Oh the irony…

Also on our first episode of the year: An audio postcard from Athens, Greece! A live report from one of Karin’s walks in the forest! More sound effects than most people get through in a lifetime!

Plus, has Karin really started imitating Scott’s American accent? Did her family really go to church DRUNK on Christmas Eve? And what is the actual difference between a hound and a dog? Find out in this New Year’s extravaganza of an episode!

Episode 13: Single Bells

Christmas Crackers!

It’s finally here: the festive episode you’ve all been waiting for! While the prosecco is flowing, Scott gets treated to a couple of English Christmas favo/u/rites: mince pies and Christmas crackers. Also don’t miss our very unique interpretation of Jingle Bells, recorded live during a Snuggling jam session.

And just to clarify once and for all: we are NOT getting married. Although just to confuse things, we did actually date for almost an entire week after our last episode. But then we broke up. And we’re NOT dating anymore. Nor are we engaged.

WE ARE BOTH SINGLE AND AVAILABLE!

Also on this week’s show: how Scott nearly got a new flat/apartment, Flashdance: The Musical in Swedish, Christmas cracker riddles, Michelle from American Pie, and an exhausting walk in the forest. Plus, as an added bonus, Karin plays the flute on the theme song as well as on all the jingles. O Christmas Treat!

Episode 12: The Engagement

Inebriated on the metro

After Snuggling with the Enemy’s victorious return two weeks ago, we went all out and celebrated with perhaps just a little bit too much Knob Creek Smoked Maple Bourbon… and in the elated commotion that arose, we decided to get married.

Hear all about our engagement (and how it ended) in this brand new episode!

Also on this week’s show: we discuss the price of saffron v. the price of cocaine, the serious lack of sunshine in Stockholm this November, the difference between crumpets and English muffins, porridge v. oatmeal, Taylor Swift, and the correct pronunciation of yoghurt.

Go easy on the Bourbon, kids, or you might end up engaged to the Enemy. Just like we did.

Episode 11: Snuggling’s back alright!

Scott Ritcher and Karin Nilsson

After nearly four months of podcast abstinence, Scott and Karin are BACK in the studio on Sveavägen, and boy do we have lots of stuff and things to talk about!

A LOT has happened since our last show. Karin has new hair, new glasses, a new coat, AND a brand new job – it’s like she’s an entirely new Karin!

Scott hasn’t really changed at all. (He somehow always seems to wear the same clothes?) On the other hand, he did go on a world tour, stopping in Berlin, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Göteborg, Louisville, Cincinnati and New York, where he took the opportunity to talk to some of our most dedicated listeners (thank you Pea, Mark and Alex).

Also on this week’s show: Bossing people around, codpieces, how Scott saved the roof of a Stockholm office building from a racist flag, rats in the streets, and The Snugglers’ take on a song by the Backstreet Boys!

We hope you have missed us! We sure as hell have missed hearing our own voices.

Episode 10: Presidential Surprise

My, what a big camera you have!

This week’s program opens with a discussion of Karin’s necklace which contains a tiny, little clock. The conversation quickly turns to the world’s most famous clock wearer, Flavor Flav of Public Enemy.

Scott is upset because he likes taking pictures but most of his friends don’t like being photographed. Though he owns only modest cameras, Karin has a well-baked theory about men who have super-expensive cameras, guitars and audio equipment.

We get a quick update on Scott’s habit of losing fingernail clippers just as the program is interrupted by a surprise guest who wants to wish Karin a belated, albeit celebratory happy birthday!

All this, plus Karin’s tips for mending a torn shirt – Needle and thread? What? – and Scott’s new iPhone app, the Adjective Thermometer.

Episode 9: The Best Things In Life Are Expensive

No advertising please

Having survived the Swedish midsummer zombie apocalypse, Scott and Karin are finally back in the recording studio after a 2-week hiatus. They get straight into discussing how most things in Sweden are extremely expensive, from getting your keys cut to buying an apartment.

But not all Swedish things come with a price tag: neighborhood newspapers are entirely free and you get two of them a week! To the dismay of Scott, who’s put up a “No advertising, please” sign on his door – despite him being the publisher of a free magazine.

Also on episode #9: The importance of paying attention to spelling, grammar and punctuation in text messages AND job applications, plus a delightful audio surprise from Kevin the Charismatic South Carolina Presenter!

Episode 8: Free Booze and Naked Animals

Naked penguins

In the eighth episode, Karin reveals having spent an entire evening enjoying free booze while looking at pictures of naked animals. Disgusting! We also find out why Scott hasn’t sorted out the sound clips he promised for this week’s show. It’s because he hasn’t had enough time in his busy schedule. Karin’s problem is the opposite. Having too much time on her hands means she ends up busy, busy, busy doing nothing at all.

Also on this week’s episode: finger nail clippers, foxgloves and dachshund heels, dry pancakes, a very mild case of World Cup fever, and why you should (or probably should not) watch the Bee Gees’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band film.

Episode 7: Snuggling with Rachel Matchett

3 apples tall sounds about right.

Meet Rachel Matchett, the first ever guest on our new feature called Enemy of the Week! Rachel stands about 3 apples tall, has the body of a 16-year-old, and can hold her liquor better than the rest of us. She brought cake and cava to the Snuggling With The Enemy studio session – cheers, Rachel!

Before snuggling with Rachel, Scott and Karin talk about the risks of sharing images on social networks, the origin of the high five, moody German music, Scott’s parents’ 50th wedding anniversary, and about whether it’s possible to be happy and satisfied with your life the way it is without the need to find partner to share it with (it’s not).

Episode 6: Held Up By the Stockholm Marathon

Marathon madness!

On their way to the recording studio, Scott and Karin are surprised to see that their route is blocked by tens of thousands of people running in the Stockholm Marathon.

By the time we finally are able to sit down and begin recording, much of the day has passed and the episode is painfully behind schedule. The episode includes treats such as an audio surprise, a discussion about voice-overs, and a new song Scott recently released with Julia Lind (iTunes, Spotify).

Episode 6 ends up as a condensed smörgåsbord of odds and ends!

Episode 5: Karin Plays the Recorder

Recorder

Karin with handwritten sheet music and a shiny recorder!

The fifth episode offers an aural treat in the form of a descant recorder played by our very own Karin! The intro theme song gets a jazzed-up baroque interpretation and England’s theme tune, Country Gardens, is treated to a well-deserved touch of woodwind. Staying on the musical theme, the hosts discuss Twitter trolls and why James Blunt’s response to them is beautiful.

Also on this week’s show:  ANOTHER apology to a cat, a living nightingale, listener feedback from a spam robot, an impersonation of Karin’s mother, and Scott’s brilliant business idea of selling espresso capsules at work.

Note to our non-Swedish listeners: This episode contains a re-enactment of a phone call between Karin and her mother Astrid — in Swedish. The role of Karin is played by Scott (hence the poor British accent), and Karin plays her own mother. Here is a rough translation:

Astrid: Hello, this is Astrid.

Karin [in a terrible British accent]: Hello, this is your daughter, Karin. ‘Ello guv’nor!

Astrid: Oh, hi! What do you want?

Karin: I’ve eaten a bird in… [ giggles] I saw a bird… iin… the forest. And I… recorded the song… on my mobile! Do you know anything about the birds?

Astrid: I know everything about the birds!

Karin:  I’d love to shall I send it to you, so that you can listen to it.

Astrid: OK then! Bye, darling daughter!

Karin: Bye! Bye mummy!

Episode 4: Double-spaced Bananas

Australian Banana Girl

The so-called Banana Girl.

Scott and Karin announce the launch of www.snuggling.se and make some corrections from last week: they apologise to The Hört, to a couple of cats and to all the people of China. Karin finally keeps her promise of being funnier on the show by telling a joke that Scott doesn’t get, and Scott returns to the topic of the pen from outer… Zzzzz.

They move on to discussing typewriters v. computers, and philosophize on the reasons why it’s become so difficult to get round to actually make notes in your note books. Also on the show: Double spaces after periods, The Australian Banana Girl, the bipolar weather of Stockholm, the ABBA Museum, why you should not treat Karin to peanut butter ice cream – and an extra special theme song for Sweden!

Scott and Karin dissect topics ranging from a hole in Scott’s shirt and how it got there, to fan mail and antiquated web browsers, to a pen from outer space and bloody Alexander Skarsgård.

Also on this week’s show: the Swedish TV license fee and why you should pay it, sex toys, cold turnips, Marilyn Manson and the full ingredient list from a packet of Icelandic liquorice. The episode features mint juleps, Kurt Cobain, Peaches Geldof, café crushes, and the feeling you get when a shop assistant comments on the amount of unhealthy food you’re buying. Plus, England gets a new theme song!
